Gapminder screencast

Screencast1: For Screencast 1 the 2 variables i used were life expectancy and GDP Per capita. Life expectancy is how long a new born baby is projected to live in it's given country. GDP Per capita is the average income in a country. The chart clearly shows that as GDP Per capita rises life expectancy rises. This is because when people are making more money they can afford things like sanitation, medicine, and health care so there not as likely to have epidemics like HIV/AIDS. Country's on the left side of the chart like Sierra Leone with low GDP Per capita have low life expectancy because they cannot afford the sanitation and medicines to combat epidemics. The chart slowly rises in the beginning. Then by 1900 things start to speed up. This could be due to medical advancements in the more developed countries. Less Developed countries are still lagging behind. After 1900 to 2012 it stays at the same pace of growth with the exception of some countries rapidly decreasing for a few years then bouncing back. This could be due to an outbreak of an epidemic or war.

Screencast 2: For Screencast 2 the variables i used were Children per woman ( total fertility) and ratio of boys to girls in primary and secondary education. Total fertility is the average amount of children a woman has in a given country. The ratio of boys to girls in education show the level of education  girls are receiving in a given country. The chart shows that as the ratio of girls in education rises the number of children an average woman has falls. This is because when woman are receiving higher levels of education they get jobs and don't want to have kids until later on. Women receive higher education in more developed countries and in more developed countries children are an economic burden instead of an economic advantage. Less developed countries like Niger average 7.6 kids per woman. The chart shows more developed countries getting to a certain point then stalling and less developed countries catching up. This is due the more developed countries reaching a 50/50 ratio and then stalling and the less developed countries still trying to reach that mark.

Crossing the line GIS activity.

The country that i think will be split into 2 countries is Canada. The central and western part of the country will remain Canada . Quebec which is on the western side of Canada will secede and become there own country. A group of countries that i think will combine are countries from the Arabian Peninsula forming  into The Arabian Gulf Union. The Arabian Gulf Union would be located on the Arabian peninsula between Africa and the middle east.

I think that Quebec will secede from Canada. Some factors that contribute to this is the language barrier. Most of Canada speaks English. The official language of Quebec is French . They believe they are unique to North America. People believe that Quebec needs to become it's own country in order to maintain it's distinct language and culture. The Arabian  Gulf Union would be formed as a military alliance. It would also help to boost the economy making The Arabian Gulf Union the 11th richest country in the world. They feel the need for a military alliance to discourage Iranian military activities and support the Syrian rebels.

The boundary between Canada and Quebec is a cultural boundary. Most of the Canadian provinces speak English. But once you cross the line into Quebec the primary language is now French. The overall culture can differ to. This is why Quebec feels the need to secede. The boundaries between countries in The Arabian Gulf Union are geometric. This would make it easy to combine because there are no major physical features in the way. The criteria that i utilized was where do the major changes occur. With Canada and Quebec i looked for where the language changed from English to French. With The Arabian Gulf Union i looked at the type of boundaries there were between all the countries. They all looked mostly geometric which would make it easy to form The Arabian Gulf Union.

How will Quebec seceding make a difference? It would cause a devolution of Canadian control giving up Quebec. The Majority of Canada outside Quebec is against the idea. This could lead to unease between the 2 countries and maybe even a civil war. How would The Arabian Gulf Union make a difference? The combination of the countries economic power would make The Arabian Gulf Union the 11th most powerful economy in the world. They would have an even bigger hold on international energy markets. It would help support Syrian rebels and discourage the Iranians from trying to take control.
